The ONE Thing Preventing Your Weight Loss

Hey everyone, welcome back! I’m Dr. Andrea Christian Parks, and I’m so glad you’re here. If you’re new, you are welcome here! Today, I’m going to share with you the one crucial thing that often stands in the way of our weight loss success—fear and disappointment.

Some of you are here for encouragement, and I promise, I have a word for you coming up. Some of you might be lurking, watching, but not ready to engage fully – yet. Maybe you’re unsure if this journey is for you. Let’s break it down together, and by the end of this post, you’ll have the clarity and encouragement you need to move forward.

Why We Struggle with Weight Loss

We know that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, and we want to honor God with them. Many of us have put in a lot of effort—countless diets, exercise routines, and weight loss programs. Despite all this effort, if you’re still here trying to lose weight, it means you haven’t yet found lasting success. And that’s okay. Here’s what usually happens:

When we try and fail, we experience two major emotions—disappointment and fear. Disappointment is tough to handle and to avoid feeling it again, we often decide not to try at all. This is particularly true for weight loss, where we might see some success, only to gain the weight back. This cycle reinforces our disappointment and fear of failure.

The Cycle of Disappointment and Fear

Disappointment is a heavy emotion. After experiencing it, our brains try to protect us by avoiding situations that might lead to more disappointment. This protective mechanism often leads us to quit before we even start. But here’s the problem: this approach guarantees that we’ll feel disappointed right now because quitting means we give up on our dreams and goals.

When we let fear dictate our actions, we’re stuck. Fear of disappointment stops us from trying again, even when we really want to lose weight, honor God with our bodies, and improve our health. It’s a vicious cycle, but it doesn’t have to be this way.

Breaking Free from Fear

Your brain might tell you that quitting now will protect you from future disappointment, but that’s a lie. If you truly want to lose weight and improve your health, quitting now only makes CERTAIN that you feel disappointed today, instead of possibly being disappointed in the future IF you fail. Instead, let’s choose commitment over fear. Yes, there’s a chance you might feel disappointed again, but there’s also a chance you might succeed.

A Word of Encouragement

I want to share a passage from Matthew 10:28-31 to encourage you. This is when Jesus sends his disciples out to preach without any supplies or support. He says:

“Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.”

Remember, you are worth more than many sparrows. God sees you, knows you, and loves you. He walks with you on this journey to honor Him with your body. You don’t need to make decisions out of fear because you are deeply valued and loved by the Father.

Moving Forward with Confidence

As you pursue weight loss, remember that God is with you every step of the way. This journey is not just about losing weight; it’s about refining your relationship with Him. By seeking to honor God with your body, you’ll not only improve your physical health but also deepen your spiritual connection.

You don’t have to be paralyzed by fear of disappointment. Instead, commit to the process, trusting that God is with you. Your worth is not determined by your success or failure in weight loss but by God’s love for you.
