How eating can put your faith into action!

Hey there, beautiful souls! Dr. Andrea Christian Parks here, and I’m thrilled you’ve joined me today. We’re about to dive into something that’s been on my heart lately – putting our faith into action on our weight loss journey. Now, I know what you’re thinking: “Another weight loss pep talk?” But hold on – this is so much more than that!

Did you know that the average person makes over 200 food-related decisions every single day? That’s 200 opportunities to honor God with our choices! It’s mind-blowing when you think about it, isn’t it? So, grab a cup of tea, settle in, and let’s chat about how we can turn our everyday eating habits into acts of worship.

The Body-Brain Connection: More Than Just a Head Game

Let’s start by addressing the elephant in the room – our brains. We often treat our bodies like they’re just fancy Uber rides for our heads, don’t we? It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking our brains are running the whole show.

But here’s the kicker: our brains aren’t perfect! Shocking, I know.

Sure, our brains are amazing at keeping our hearts beating and our lungs breathing. But when it comes to decision-making, especially about food? Well, let’s just say they could use a little guidance. You can direct your thoughts – and while your mind likes to automate thoughts and actions, you can manage your mind. Just because your mind thinks, “I want to eat that cookie”, doesn’t mean YOU have to agree with that thought!

Lordship in the Kitchen: Who’s Really in Charge?

Now, let’s get real for a second. The way we eat is actually a lordship issue. Yep, you heard me right! Every time we decide what to eat, when to eat, and how much to eat, we’re making a choice about who’s in charge – us or God.

It’s like a mini spiritual battleground right there in our kitchens. Will we follow our impulses or God’s guidance? It’s not always easy, but that’s where the rubber meets the road in our faith walk.

Honoring God with Our Bodies: What Does That Even Mean?

Let’s zoom in on a powerful scripture that’s been rattling around in my brain lately:

“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.” – 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (NIV)

In biblical context, this verse about sexual purity, but stick with me here. What if we applied this to our eating habits? Mind-blowing, right?

To honor means to treat with high respect and to fulfill an obligation. So, when we’re honoring God with our bodies through our eating, we’re showing respect for this amazing gift He’s given us and keeping our end of the deal in our relationship with Him.

When Food and Faith Collide: Recognizing Dishonoring Habits

Alright, confession time. I’m not perfect at this honoring-God-with-my-eating thing. Shocker, I know! But let me share a couple of examples from my own life where I’ve caught myself dishonoring God with my eating habits:

    1. The Rush Job: You know that frantic, gotta-eat-it-all-before-I-realize-I’m-full feeling? Yeah, that’s not honoring God. It’s like we’re trying to outrun His “full” signal!
    2. The Mindless Munch: This is my sneaky nemesis. It’s that unconscious grazing, picking at food when we’re not even hungry. We’re using food as a distraction instead of fuel, and that’s definitely not honoring our temple.

What about you? What eating habits do you struggle with that might not be honoring God? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments!

Putting Faith into Action: Small Choices, Big Impact

Here’s the beautiful thing: every meal, every snack, is an opportunity to put our faith into action. It’s not about being perfect; it’s about being intentional. Here are a few practical ways we can start honoring

God with our eating:

    1. Pause and Pray: Before you eat, take a moment to thank God for the food and ask for guidance in your choices.
    2. Listen to Your Body: Pay attention to hunger and fullness cues. These are God’s ways of communicating with us through our bodies.
    3. Eat Mindfully: Slow down, savor your food, and enjoy this gift from God.
    4. Choose Nourishing Foods: Opt for foods that truly nourish the temple of your body.
