It’s our last week on our hero’s journey to permanent weight loss and I’m so glad you’re here! If you missed any of the weeks before this one during this month-long series, go back and grab them – it’ll be worth your time to get encouraged and inspired along your weight loss journey.
This week we’re going to talk about how to get the support we need to succeed at weight loss. So many of us think that because our weight seems like a personal problem, we have to solve it alone. But we don’t. And we shouldn’t. Being overweight can be tied up in feelings of guilt and shame, which cause us to want to hide. When we hide, we often don’t progress toward our weight loss goal. But if we muster the strength to try to lose weight, we’re afraid to tell anyone or even get the help we need so that we don’t feel embarrassed or ashamed if we fail again.
But not having help is actually part of WHY we fail again. We need help to be successful!
Let me give you examples from our heroes. They might have been the main characters in their stories, but they weren’t making it happen alone.
First, Shuri in Wakanda Forever. She was a tech wiz and had an incredible ability to make new devices and weapons for her battles. But she didn’t create everything alone. Remember how prosperous Wakanda was? The vibraneum made them wealthy and full of resources. Shuri also had a lab and support staff to help her create her tools and weapons. She also had the support of her mother, the wise elders, and the ancestors to help her fulfill the call to become the Black Panther after her brother died. She was definitely NOT alone.
Second, Moana was out crossing the ocean trying to save her island. Sometimes it seemed like she really was alone. But she found Maui to help her. Even when Maui wasn’t there, the spirit of her grandmother was there to guide her along and help her make it. Even the ocean was there, lifting her up and saving her life! Moana might have left her family and home to go on her journey, but she wasn’t alone either. She had help to save her island!
Succeeding at weight loss isn’t a solo activity. You’ve actually created your support team in the past and been successful. You’ve joined a weight loss challenge at work or partnered up with a friend to make sure you stayed on your exercise program. And it worked – as long as you kept it up. The only problem with what you’ve done in the past is to build your team around a diet or exercise regimen. What you need is a team that can help you toward permanent weight loss, who will help you focus on hunger and fullness, resiliency, consistency, troubleshooting self-sabotage, and providing compassion to yourself when you make a mistake.
This isn’t the kind of team you’ve had access to in the past.
You can build your own team to do this for you. You might even have a couple of people in mind right now who can help. It’s a lot of work, but you can create this support system for yourself to help you lose weight for good.
