Is THIS your Year to Lose Weight? Make A Decision

Welcome back! It’s good to have you here.

It’s time to kick off this year and get your weight loss plan started with power and intention. So we’re going to spend the next few weeks talking about a few tools you need to make sure you make 2023 the year you lose your weight for good. This week, I want to help you get in the right mindset to make sure you’re successful. I also have a few resources to offer you at the end, so keep reading!

The beginning of a new year is a fun time. I love the freshness and hope of a new year – what might happen? What will I accomplish? I always get swept up in the excitement and I’d make resolutions every year, most of the time vowing that this would be the year I’d lose my weight.

Then I quit making resolutions.

You see, I decided that resolutions didn’t work and I didn’t want to waste time on something that wasn’t going to help me. So I swore off resolutions altogether and quit making them. I said that there were better ways to get my goals met than resolutions and told exactly that anyone who asked about my New Year’s resolutions.

But actually, there was something behind quitting resolutions.

Here’s what it was: I didn’t want to feel disappointed in myself when I didn’t meet my resolution. Disappointment is a big, sad, heavy emotion and I didn’t like it. So I figured I’d save myself that pain and just not make a resolution.

But here’s the problem with that thinking: I also didn’t give myself a chance to get what I wanted (to lose weight). Even though I said there were other ways to reach my weight loss goal, I didn’t look for them. I just didn’t try. I chose to fail in advance by not making a commitment to solving my weight problem. And that meant that even without a failed resolution, I was disappointed anyway because I had already failed without giving myself a chance to try.

There’s a difference between a resolution and a decision. Most resolutions sound good but have no real commitment or plan behind them. They’re more aspirational and hopeful than practical. And that’s why they fail.

To make this year the year you lose your weight, you MUST make a decision. A decision means you are committed to reaching your goal. A decision means that no matter what happens between now and when you reach the goal, you keep working to get there. It doesn’t matter how many mistakes or obstacles you encounter, you’re going to keep going. You will figure out how to solve this problem. You have a single-minded focus that keeps you moving toward your goal of losing weight.

Making a decision also means you will use your time, energy, and money to solve this problem. You are going to have to put your resources behind your commitment. You’ve already done this in the past – how much money do you think you’ve spent over the years on diet food, supplements, personal trainers, and gym memberships? You know your weight problem is solvable. Other people have lost weight and kept it off. You. Can. Too!

If you have committed that this is the year you lose weight, then make the decision that nothing will stop you. Your schedule, your kids, money concerns, time constraints – all of these can still be there AND you can figure out how to lose weight. But it starts with a decision. Let this be the year you look back and say, “That was the year I decided that I was going to lose weight. And I did!”
