How to Handle Social Eating When You’re Not Hungry

As a physician turned life and weight loss coach, I’ve dedicated my career to helping women of faith lose weight and transform their lives. It’s been an incredible journey, and I’m excited to share some insights that can help you simplify your weight loss journey and finally achieve the goals you’ve been striving for.

I’ll be honest – I left full-time medical practice out of frustration. So many of my patients would come in, desperately wanting to lose weight, get off their blood pressure medications, or avoid becoming diabetic. But in those brief 10-15 minute appointments, I couldn’t provide the support they needed to make lasting changes.

That’s when I realized there had to be a better way. By becoming a coach, I’ve been able to dive deeper into understanding how the mind affects the body and why we often struggle to do the very things we know we should.

The Problem with Traditional Medical Approaches

If you go to see your doctor, you’re probably going to hear that you need to lose weight. If you ask how to do it, the doctor is going to say, “Eat better and exercise more”. Well, yeah. But HOW? They won’t tell you that. But it’s not because they don’t care. It’s because they don’t KNOW. Most doctors have no training in nutrition or the mental blocks that prevent people from changing their self-destructive patterns. They’re not equipped to help you make those kind of long-term changes in your life.

But I am. That’s why I became a coach in addition to being a holistic nutrition and lifestyle-medicine trained physician.

You need a mental AND physical approach to weight loss, not just the instructions on what to do. Most of us know WHAT to do – we just can’t figure out why we can’t get it done.

If you’ve been on this weight loss journey for a while, you might relate to wanting to do the right thing but somehow falling short. It’s like what Paul describes in Romans 7 – wanting to do what’s right but not following through. You’ve probably tried countless diets, exercise plans, and maybe even considered giving up altogether.

But I’m here to tell you something important:

Nothing is Impossible with God – Even Weight Loss

That’s right. If nothing is impossible with God, then weight loss is absolutely achievable. It’s not just about honoring your body as a temple; it’s about reflecting God’s glory through how you care for yourself. So let’s lift your spirits and get back on track with what’s truly possible.

Simplifying Weight Loss: It’s Not About Complexity

Here’s a truth that might surprise you: weight loss doesn’t have to be complicated. You don’t need fancy meal plans, point systems, or personal chefs to succeed. In fact, simplifying your approach can often lead to better results.

Breaking the Social Eating Habit

One of the biggest obstacles I see in my clients’ weight loss journeys is the habit of eating simply because others are eating. It’s a cultural norm we’ve all fallen into, but it’s time to question this behavior.

Think about it – how often do you grab a coffee or snack just because you’re meeting someone, even if you’re not hungry? This mindless consumption can sabotage your weight loss efforts without realizing it. When you get together with someone, you’re there to connect. If you’re hungry, you eat. You don’t HAVE to do both – social conditioning makes us think we automatically do both. Automatic thinking is what’s sabotaging your weight loss efforts!

Practical Tips for Separating Social Events from Eating

  1. Choose non-caloric beverages: Opt for black coffee, unsweetened tea, or water during social gatherings.
  2. Question your hunger: Before eating at an event, ask yourself if you’re truly hungry.
  3. Plan your day: If you know you have a social event, plan your meals accordingly so you can participate without overeating.
  4. Focus on the relationship: Remember, the point of social gatherings is connection, not consumption.

Embracing a Biblical Perspective on Weight Loss

As we work on simplifying our approach to weight loss, let’s keep in mind Ephesians 4:22-24:

“You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.”

This scripture reminds us that changing our habits isn’t just about physical health – it’s about aligning our lives more closely with God’s intentions for us.
