Drop The “I See It, I Eat It”

Hello everyone! I’m Dr. Andrea Christian Parks, and I’m thrilled you’re here with me today. Let’s dive into a topic that can genuinely transform your weight loss journey: keeping it simple. Life is busy enough without adding complex and hard-to-follow weight loss plans. So, let’s simplify things and make this journey easier and more sustainable for you. You CAN do this – you just need something that you CAN and WANT to keep doing!

Who Am I Talking To?

I’m an OBGYN physician and a life and weight loss coach, and I specialize in helping women of faith lose weight by connecting the mind and body. If you believe that the mind and body are deeply intertwined and that aligning them leads to true wellness, then you’re in the right place.

I’m speaking to women who love God and want to align with Him. If you’re looking to lose weight for health reasons or simply to feel better, this message is for you. Whether you’re dealing with pre-diabetes, borderline hypertension, or just the desire to feel lighter and healthier, I’m here to help.

Why Simplify Weight Loss?

Weight loss often seems overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. Many of us are bombarded with complex programs and advice that can be difficult to fit into our busy lives. But the truth is that weight loss CAN be simple. It’s about tuning into the body signals God has given us—hunger and fullness.

The Pitfall of “I See It, I Eat It”

One major habit that can derail our weight loss efforts is eating just because food is in front of us. I call this “I see it, I eat it.” This habit is particularly challenging because it’s often unconscious. I struggled with this myself, especially during my busy residency when I felt I “deserved” treats for working so hard. When I was in training, doughnuts would show up in the breakroom and I’d convince myself that it was ok to eat them because I was working 80 hours that week. I deserved a doughnut!

But did I really? Did I deserve to treat my body with disregard, feeding it fun food because I was stressed and overwhelmed?

“I want it, I eat it” eating doesn’t honor the body’s natural signals or God’s design for us. Instead, it often leads to overeating and frustration.

Listening to Your Body

To lose weight in a way that honors God and is sustainable, we need to focus on the basics:

  1. Hunger: Eat when you’re physically hungry. This is your body’s natural way of telling you it needs fuel.
  2. Fullness: Stop eating when you’re comfortably full, not stuffed. This helps you maintain a healthy balance.

Scriptural Guidance

Our journey to health and wellness is not separate from our spiritual lives. As believers, everything we do, including how we treat our bodies, should honor God. We miss God’s sovereignty when we take areas of our lives out of his way, and many of us do this around eating and the care of our bodies.

Ephesians 4:22-24 reminds us to put off our old selves and be renewed in the spirit of our minds. This applies to our eating habits as well. We can put away old, deceitful desires and embrace a new way of eating that aligns with God’s design.

A New Habit: Trust and Honor

Instead of eating just because we see food, let’s trust and honor the signals our bodies give us. This habit not only simplifies weight loss but also aligns with God’s plan for us to be healthy and strong for His work.
