Welcome, everyone! I’m Dr. Andrea Christian Parks, a physician, life and weight loss coach, and devoted believer. Today, I want to share something that’s been on my mind lately—how unnecessarily complicated weight loss plans can be. They often involve extensive meal plans, buying special products, or strict workout regimens. And those things sell, mostly because we believe the lie that weight loss is complicated. But here’s the thing: complexity isn’t sustainable. If you can’t maintain your plan, you’ll quit and regain any weight you’ve lost. So, let’s talk about simplifying things.
Storytime: A Lesson in Simplicity
The day I wrote this post, it was a (normal) hectic Tuesday evening in our household of six, including three teenagers with various activities. Everyone was going in different directions and I was trying to figure out how to feed everyone (including me!) without becoming a short-order cook or spending the little time I had cooking from scratch. Sound familiar? My first instinct was to make things complicated, because that’s what our brains do! I thought about cooking multiple dishes, making meals to go for the kids who had to be out, and a different meal for those who would be at home.
But instead of overthinking it, I asked my brain to find a simple solution (I’ll give you the magic question later in this post!). I had Cuban black beans in the freezer, so I pulled out taco toppings, warmed the beans, and made an instant pot of rice. Dinner done! The ones who needed food to go packed up their burritos, and the at-home family ate what was on the counter. I had a taco salad and it was delicious!
The Power of Keeping It Simple
Scripture teaches us that “God is not a god of confusion but of peace” (1 Corinthians 14:33). When we simplify things, we align ourselves with a spirit of peace. And when it comes to weight loss, this principle holds true. God wants us to honor our bodies, which means eating in a way that respects our hunger and fullness signals. It doesn’t have to involve elaborate meal-prepping or complicated cooking routines. Start by listening to your body—eat when you’re hungry, stop when you’re full.
Unlocking the Tool for Simplicity
Here’s the magic question: Whenever you feel overwhelmed or stuck, ask yourself, “What CAN I do?” This shifts your focus from limitations to possibilities. Instead of getting caught up in a whirlwind of doubts and worries, your brain starts generating solutions. It might stutter for a moment – be patient! But within a minute or two, your mind will offer you some solutions. Stay with it and choose the one you like! It’s about empowering yourself to find straightforward, manageable actions that move you closer to your goals.
