Welcome – I’m glad you’re here!
Today I want to talk about the connection between our weight loss journey and our faith. So often, we don’t see these two things as connected – we go about our weight loss efforts as a task or goal but don’t think about God in the process. We might cry out to Him in frustration, but we don’t use our relationship with Him to help us along the path forward. Today, I want to share a bit of my journey and the revelations that have emerged from intertwining faith with the pursuit of wellness.
The Intersection of Faith and Weight Loss
As a physician, I’ve always been in awe of the human body’s complexity and its innate ability to heal and sustain itself. Supporting people in medicine as they heal has only deepened my faith and appreciation for the divine craftsmanship behind our existence. But, as I navigated through my struggles with weight and health, I realized that the journey to wellness goes beyond knowing what to eat or how much to exercise; it’s deeply rooted in spiritual alignment and obedience.
Listening to the Body’s Wisdom
The body speaks a language ordained by God, signaling its needs through hunger, satiety, and energy levels. Yet, in a world cluttered with dietary rules and fitness fads, we often silence these divine whispers, opting instead to conform to worldly wisdom. This realization struck me as I observed countless individuals, myself included, chasing after the perfect diet or the most effective workout plan, only to find ourselves in a perpetual cycle of temporary success and inevitable setbacks.
The turning point in my journey came with the understanding that true transformation begins not with changing what we eat or how we exercise, but with renewing our minds. Romans 12:2 doesn’t merely suggest a shift in thinking; it calls for a radical transformation that aligns our health endeavors with our spiritual beliefs.
A Living Sacrifice
Romans 12:1 urges us to present our bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God. When we think about our bodies this way, it changes our efforts from one of self-improvement to an act of worship. Being a living sacrifice entails more than just abstaining from harmful habits; it involves actively caring for our body, the temple that houses the Holy Spirit.
Where do we start on this journey of transformation? It begins with discernment—distinguishing between the body’s true needs and the desires instigated by stress, boredom, or emotional turmoil. It continues with obedience—honoring God’s design by responding to hunger with nourishment and to fullness with gratitude.
Honoring the Temple
Caring for our bodies as temples involves more than cleanliness and abstention from sin; it also includes how we nourish and sustain ourselves. If our bodies are indeed temples, then when and how we eat our food is not merely a personal choice but an act of reverence and worship.
So, what food rules have you been following that don’t honor the signals God has placed in your body? How often do you eat for reasons other than physical hunger? Reflecting on these questions and realigning our eating habits with our body’s innate wisdom can lead to not just physical transformation but spiritual growth.
