It’s a tough spot to be in. You want to lose weight and you think you know what you have to do, but every time you get on a new plan, it falls apart. What’s the problem?
The problem is that your brain isn’t interested in you making changes that are new and helpful for weight loss.
What?
That’s the unpleasant truth.
Your mind is interested in safety and conservation of energy. Those are your brain’s primary interests. So if you try to change things up to lose weight, you create new work and new ways of doing things that challenge your brain (take up LOTS of energy) and threaten the status quo (the way you always do things, which equals a safety threat to your brain).
You can see how your brain would fight you on losing weight.
You losing weight opposes the two most important things that your brain is trying to maintain.
So how do we get your brain on your side?
You need brain training. It’s just like weight training, only for your brain. Lifting weights and working through the discomfort of the repetitions and the muscle strain make the muscles stronger. Eventually, those reps aren’t as tough and you need heavier weights to feel the same effort.
If you want to change your mind so you can change how you relate to food, you have to practice thinking differently than you do now. Your thinking about food, snacks, portion size, hunger, emotional eating (there’s more, but I’ll stop there) – all those thoughts affect how you eat, when you eat, and how much you eat. Almost all of those thoughts are subconscious. They’re just running in the background. That’s why whenever you start a new diet, you end up in the same place – off the diet and frustrated. It’s because you put someone else’s plan on top of your life and you didn’t have any help deprogramming all the sabotaging thoughts running in the background. Thoughts like:
This is hard.
I’m too busy to do all this meal prepping.
Just a few chips won’t hurt.
I’ll just have a few cookies and start over on Monday.
What a day – I need a glass of wine!
This thinking is what motivates your eating and demotivates you from staying on your plan. Most of them aren’t intentional or malicious, but they definitely work against you. Putting a diet on top of this kind of thinking only works as long as your thoughts are excited and hopeful (the beginning of the diet) and then when those feelings wear off, the old thoughts come right back in. They’re easy, they allow the brain to be efficient, nothing changes, and you’re stuck with the weight.
If you want to get the weight off for good, you have to think DIFFERENTLY.
You can do this. It’s a lot of work to change your mind, but it can be done. You’ve done plenty of hard things before!
I will say this: It’s easier with a coach. That’s why coaches exist. If you were an elite athlete, you’d have a coach to help you accomplish your next goal. If you were a CEO, you’d have a corporate coach to help you achieve your next goal in the business. Weight loss is the same – you’re much more likely to succeed with a coach than alone.
It’s time for you to invest in yourself and get the help you need to accomplish your goal. What would you be able to do in your life if your weight wasn’t taking up your time and energy?
